Sheer Indulgence

As so many of us know, a large issue with “diets” is the desire to go back to our old bad habits.  I can remember the taste and texture of so many “bad” yet yummy foods.  Rather than succumb, I’ve been trying to come up with versions of favorite foods I can eat without worry.

It’s zucchini season, and of course my mind goes to deep fried zuke sticks, breaded in bread or cracker crumbs.  Obviously wrong on so many levels.  I searched for a low carb version, and came up with one that started out “drop the

Ready to go in the oven

slices into a beaten egg”  and ended with “fry in oil.” Which did work but the end result wasn’t exactly what I wanted.

But, I asked myself, what if… What if I used the oil to make the coating stick, then stuck it in the small convection oven?  Hmmm, my appetite replied.  That sounds like an awfully yummy dinner.

Wipe off the zukes, cut in strips, toss in olive oil until well coated, then toss in parmesan cheese.  Yep, parmesan cheese.

Trust me.

Bake at 450 Fahrenheit about 20 minutes, until it’s yummy browned.  Our local restaurant, Katrinah’s East Mountain Grill, has a to-die-for green chile ranch salad dressing.  So I add green chile powder to some good ranch dressing (haven’t made my own yet, but this one is low carb) and went to town.

All done and ready to devour

Veggies and cheese for dinner.  How yummy.  How decadent.  Sheer Indulgence.

How Writing is NOT Like the Olympic Games

Earlier this month, I did a blog for the Fantasy, Futuristic, and Paranormal Chapter of RWA, drawing a parallel between the Olympics and Writing.  http://ffnp.blogspot.com/2012/07/lessons-from-olympics-by-monica-stoner.html  All the raw talent in the world doesn’t do any of us…athlete or writer, much good without study and hard work.  As the games progress, it becomes increasingly obvious that timing and luck have a lot to do with success, but first they have to be AT the Olympic Games to take advantage of that success.

Out of the nearly 11,000 athletes competing in London, more than 500 from the UK and USA each, only 312 will take home the gold, silver, or bronze.   Not such great odds.  A lot of the athletes who paraded into that stadium will go home with nothing but memories, not always happy.

Well, this is certainly like writing!

Except. In each event, as with The Highlander, there can be only one–set of medals.  Fourth place and lower, even when the unplaced is a world class talent, becomes a part of Olympic history, to be dragged out in a future game of Trivial Pursuit.  Okay, still like writing.  After all there is only one winner in each category of RWA’s Rita and Golden Heart.

And here is where writing stands out.  Every Rita finalist is already a winner, since the Rita recognizes published books.  And every single Golden Heart finalist has the distinct possibility of publication.  Every. Single. One.  All of them winners.  Sure some of them will be read by  more people than others, but all of them will be read.

And that is just plain wonderful.

Lacking permission to display photos of the Olympics, the Rita or the Golden Heart, I’ll share a photo taken from my window.  Yeah, New Mexico has some pretty terrific sunsets.

Reader Participation…the Olympics

I was searching for a quick news/weather update on the television and ended up in the middle of the Hoda/Kathie Lee (not) at the Olympics.  Generally I turn off the idiot box when they come on, but I was deep into untangling a plot point and not ready to step away.  Then they did one of their silly surveys, consisting of a few questions about the Olympics.  In particular:

What is your favorite Olympic event?

What is your favorite part of the opening ceremonies?

Huh, some pretty good questions.  So I’m going to give my favorites, and you can pitch in.  Let’s see, do we want to have prizes?  Why the heck not?  What about a random pick from my late husband’s collection of Olympic pins? No street value, he just collected pins. Particularly from when the Olympics was in Los Angeles.  And that’s when I find them again, things have been topsy turvy here for a while.  Or maybe we can just do this for fun??

My answers:

Favorite event.  For sheer eye candy, it has to be Men’s swimming.  Wow, talk about athletic beauty on display!  And when they do show a bit of Water Polo, I have to head for the ice water.  But my true favorite event is the Dressage, especially when it’s Classical, without the current trend for over flexing and mechanical devices.  I came into horses in the time when training was more about time spent and less about shortcuts.   A good Dressage ride, with horse and rider in perfect balance and coordination, is a thing of pure beauty

NOT Classical Dressage, but really fun!

Favorite part of the opening ceremonies. I realize every opening ceremony has some special secret attraction, not all of which come off as planned.  Remember Korea and roasted pigeons?  On the upside Finland’s Winter Olympics with the peek a book fairy tale aspect?  And who wouldn’t be impressed by the sheer magnitude of the Beijing opening ceremonies.

None of this holds a candle to the expression on the faces of the young athletes as they step into the stadium behind the flag of their country, and are met with that wall of noise.  The delight and awe and sheer exuberance makes the whole torturously long ceremony worth every second.

So, those are mine.  What about yours?

Keeping up the appetite

So, low carb since late January. How DO I survive.

Very well, thanks for asking!!  The big problem, of course, was getting over my eating habits.  NO more fries, NO more burgers.  NO more processed foods at all.  Sigh.  Cook all my own meals, or eat where I know how the food is prepared.  Okay, that’s not so difficult.  But HOW can I do without bread?

Rather well, actually, with the help of some wonderful low carb websites and blogs.  And cauliflower. Yeah, that weird white stuff makes a pretty darned good substitute for yummy.  This was the inspiration: http://whatsfordinner-momwhatsfordinner.blogspot.ca/2012/06/cheesy-garlic-cauliflower-bread-sticks.html

I’m playing with variations. When I’m feeling leisurely, I use fresh cauliflower.  But I buy frozen in smallish bags when they come up on sale, and my freezer is STOCKED. So tonight I microwaved for about five minutes, then ran it through my small food processor.  Scramble an egg in a small bowl, add a cup of the processed cauliflower.  Add a cup of grated Italian type cheese (I’ve used cheddar or Mexican cheese blends, especially when I’m doing a green chili cheese variation.  But tonight was all about Italian.

Cauli/cheese bread, spaghetti squash, and a glass of white. Come on over

Add garlic powder and mixed Italian seasoning.  Use parchment paper on your cooking tray. (DON’T forget the paper) and a bit of Olive Oil.  Pat the cauli/cheese mix out flat, bake at 450 degrees until it’s dark.  You can add more cheese but I haven’t bothered, it’s just yummy as it comes.  MMMM

And tonight I baked spaghetti squash, scraped it out into a bowl, and added sauce made from crushed tomatoes, onions, garlic, red bell pepper, and the wonderful portabello mushrooms on sale at Smith’s.

Yep, surviving pretty well.

And if you’re looking for something to read while enjoying, I could suggest either My Killer My Love (Kendra makes her own bread) or Teach Me To Forget (Jonathan does the cooking, to save both of their stomachs)

My Killer My Love

Both books are available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Black Opal Books, Smashwords.

Enjoy trying the “bread” or the books

What’s Your Motivation

I’m visiting today at Lisa Taylor’s Writer’s Block Party, talking about motivation.  The inspiration came from this terrific workshop I’m taking at Savvy Authors on “Making GMC Work For You.”  GMC being, of course, Goal, Motivation, Conflict.  What your characters want, why they want it, what stops them from getting what they want.  One lucky commenter will get an e-copy of “Teach Me To Forget”

I quoted “Galaxy Quest,” one of my all time favorite Sci Fic movies.  Whoever can give me the next line after that quote will be put “in the hat” to win an e-copy of “My Killer My Love.”  Send your answer to monakarel@gmail.com so you don’t give the answer away!  Both contests end June 30.

Hope to hear from you soon

A Few Good Blogs

I’m blogging today with Lynda Scott at Star Crossed Lovers, musing on how we as writers have to mantain control of our lives:  http://star-crossedromance.blogspot.com/2012/06/guest-mona-karel.html

But for now I want to share a blog from the Land of Enchantment Romance Authors, about the inspiration for the Rebecca contest.  Caution, heart wrenching alert: http://www.leranm.com/category/blog/

I’m back from the Saluki National, loaded with pictures of the new site at Purina, and some musings I’ll be sharing about the trip, and about beginning to rework my life.  Maybe tomorrow?

What’s up with Bethany in a motor home? And with an Irish Setter?

In Teach Me To Forget , I put my heroine in a motor home.  When I conceived the book (I carried this baby for a long time, folks) I had a memory of the first time we rented a motor home to go to the dog shows in Lompoc, CA.  It was a class “C” which means built on a van base with a compartment over the driver section.  We slept in that compartment and the dogs stayed down below (well most of the time anyway!)  As we settled in that cozy spot,  I thought how good it felt to be snuggled together. It would only need some rain falling on the roof so close above our heads to give it that last nudge toward super romantic.  Not likely to have rain in Lompoc in July.  But very possible to have rain in the remote areas north of San Francisco.  And I had a pivotal scene for a future book embedded in my mental files.

After several years of renting, we bought a used Class “C.”  When it’s not hauling us to dog shows it makes a great guest room.  I’m packing it now for the Saluki National. A lot of good memories were made in this vehicle, and there will be a lot more to come.

And then the question comes up:  with my decades of life with Salukis, why does Bethany share her life with an Irish Setter?  Hmmm, good point.  I could say it’s because I’ve always loved those gorgeous red dogs, even though Salukis have been my passion for so long.  I could say it was a conscious decision due to name recognition of Irish Setter as opposed to the more rare Saluki.  Actually, I liked Bethany too much to subject her to life with a sneaky thieving Saluki.  Okay, not really.

The best answer I can come up with is an Irish Setter is the right breed of dog for Bethany.  Baron is a beloved clown with no desire to be anything but Bethany’s best friend.  He’s not much of a hunter or guard dog, but when it comes to Bethany’s safety, Baron is the hero of the moment.

EXCERPT:

“If you were really worth anything, you’d go for help. Lassie would have had the Marines here by now,”Bethany said sternly to the dog below her. Then again, she reminded herself, Lassie could have called for a stand-in. All Baron could do was look up at her with his head tilted, foolish tongue hanging out the side of his mouth. As first he had barked ferociously, frustrated because he couldn’t get up in the tree with her, angry because she wouldn’t come down and play with him. “It is, after all, your fault.”

In all honesty, she had to admit it was as much her fault as Baron’s. True, she’d slipped when the setter, fast on the heels of a slow rabbit, had tumbled into a ditch, yelping piteously as he lost his footing. But it had been her own idiotic impulse, born of a long denied desire, that encouraged her to climb the tree in the first place. Branches set close together and a convenient vine had aided and abetted in her juvenile whim. The same branches and vine served to trap her foot and score her hands deeply when she attempted to scramble out of the tree with more enthusiasm than thought.

They wouldn’t have wandered to an unknown section of the woods if her mind had been on where she was going rather than what had happened the night before. She’d left early that morning, too embarrassed to face Jonathan. The walk and her thoughts, after a night of too much thinking and not enough sleep, had brought her nothing but the realization that she could not continue to stay in J. Phillip Merritt’s house. Not and maintain control over her emotions and her life. If she started within the next few hours, she could be halfway to San Francisco before the evening.

***

Jonathan does rescue Bethany from the tree, and their relationship is able to grow as they learn to trust enough to reveal themselves to each other.   Teach Me To Forget is available as an e-book or paperback.

Accomplish Something

Sometimes life can be pretty overwhelming.  It’s felt that way for me a few times lately, and I’ve had to remind myself to break down the big scary jobs into smaller bites.  I need to be getting ready for the Saluki National, plus continue with catching up on a year’s worth of house cleaning, not to mention working on my next book.  But I can’t do it all at once and often end up doing none of it.

So many choices.  Should I do the dishes??

Put away the folded laundry?

Send off a blog to Liv Rancourt?  Okay, that one was easy, since it was already  mostly written thanks to a post from my late husband’s cousin.  Liv’s awesome blog  After you read through my ramblings on how our romance books are perceived, check out Liv’s Team Sophia.  What a wonderful thing you’re doing, Liv.

My muse is giving me the finger, so writing doesn’t seem to be in the cards.  Maybe later.

Reblog?

I’ve been following Kristen Lamb’s wonderful blog on the writing business.  I would say I want to be Kristen when I grow up, but I can’t wait that long!!

One of the responders said they were going to “reblog” Kristen’s writing.  ARRGGHH something else to learn!  In the meantime, here’s the link. It is worth your time to check this out, if you are any sort of an artist.
